Why don't romances still use the original covers?

When an author signs a contract with a traditional publisher, it includes terms under which the author can regain publishing rights. These may include a certain number of years and/or number of sales. Although the rights might be returned, the cover remains the property of the publisher. Also, it may look out of date by current standards.

Who chooses the cover for a romance novel?

In the case of a traditional publisher, an art director makes the choice in conjunction with the editor. Sometimes the author is consulted, but not always. If a book is self-published or reissued, the author may hire a cover designer or she may choose to design the cover herself, often using images licensed from a stock website that contracts with artists and photographers. The use of AI (artificial intelligence) images for covers is controversial, and bestselling author Jacqueline Diamond does not use these.
